Dangleben shares an unfiltered, deeply personal account of his journey from a small fishing village in Pointe Michel, Dominica, to the demanding halls of American medical institutions. Through a series of powerful essays, he unpacks the challenges of navigating racial bias, systemic barriers, and the weight of proving himself in a profession that often sought to sideline him.
With raw honesty and profound insight, Dr. Dangleben reflects on his victories, struggles, and the resilience it took to forge a path as a Black immigrant in medicine. From encounters with discrimination to moments of triumph in the operating room, this collection is a testament to perseverance, identity, and the pursuit of excellence against all odds. Immigrant to Surgeon is not just his story, it is a voice for every marginalized professional who has ever questioned their place in a world that demands they work ten times harder.
